The mixed use redevelopment of the Horsebridge and Brownings Yard site in Whitstable, Kent, provides community, retail and residential accommodation.
The Horsebridge Centre has become a focus for the town, characterised by a striking and iconic copper roof and associated public square and band stand.
Five 600sq.ft retail units link The Horsebridge with the High Street and a 3,000sq.ft restaurant addresses the new square. The residential element comprises 34 dwellings including two and three bedroom apartments and town houses.
Our design was chosen in a public competition, to replace the car park and former buildings; a 19th Century slipper bath building, an old community building and a workshop.
The end result of the redevelopment secured a Building for Life Gold Award and has been described as ‘gentle’ architecture which not only captures the unique atmosphere of the town with its narrow, winding alleyways and timber-boarded houses, but combines historic architectural references with modern design.
