BPTW has been collaborating with Gravesham Borough Council for a number of years to design and deliver a range of attractive, affordable homes to address a shortage of suitable housing in the borough. Initially we prepared numerous feasibilities for the council, some of which were prioritised and taken forward to be delivered, including a number of infill sites within existing estates.

We have successfully secured planning permission for a number of schemes on behalf of the Council, such as, St Hilda’s, phase 1 of St Patrick’s Gardens, a redevelopment project of an existing commercial unit into three houses, ten flats and four maisonettes. The second phase of St Patricks Gardens delivers 24 new homes and was completed in 2022.

We also secured permission for Valley Drive, a scheme that will provide 48 new affordable homes, and Constable Road and Rembrandt Drive, a scheme of 7 age-friendly homes. Comprising two residential blocks, Valley Drive offers 16 general needs flats, alongside 32 independent living flats intended for over 55s. Constable Road and Rembrandt Drive provides homes which utilise a bungalow typology, designed to reflect the needs of older residents and characterised by ample amenity space, a wheelchair accessible layout and a flexible room in the roof. Working in close collaboration with the Council, BPTW’s proposals for the two schemes form part of a wider strategy to address the needs of an ageing population in Gravesend, many of whom struggle to remain in larger family homes but are often left with no option due to a lack of provision for downsizers.

As a result of our work with the Council we have established an excellent working relationship, and together we aspire to deliver high quality homes that respond to the present needs of the local population.

Sharon Donald, Housing Strategy and Development Manager at Gravesham Borough Council said: “Gravesham Borough Council has worked with BPTW Architects for several years on projects ranging from the redevelopment of garage courts to the replacement of bedsit accommodation and redundant Council owned buildings with new, fit for purpose social housing. BPTW and Gravesham have worked well together and, as our schemes grow in size and complexity, we continue to appreciate their knowledge, experience and ‘can-do’ outlook.”
