Corstorphine & Wright’s proposals for Bardell Wharf represent a collaborative approach taken by Quinn Estates’ team and the Local Authority. The result is a mixed-use development shaped by a carefully considered approach to both the historic setting and existing townscape of Rochester.

The proposals included a range of accommodation types which will provide diversity within the town and complement the existing and emerging residential developments. Bardell Wharf enhances the existing High Street and strengthens the local economy with the introduction of a new community.

The development is sensitively integrated into the High Street by the retention of several frontage buildings. These are intended to be refurbished and repurposed for retail and residential use, an enhancement to the current condition. Additions to these buildings inherit scale and proportion from the Victorian period, whilst introducing a contemporary style appropriate to today’s living aspirations.

The buildings aligning the railway edge respond by taking on a heavier, industrial-wharf language. Multi-pane windows, dark brick tones and archways to the ground floor provide distinction and lend a timeless quality to the buildings. Residential entrances align Bardell Terrace to provide an active street, creating an enlivened domestic environment to replace the current inactive industrial route. The development is seen as an opportunity to install a long-lasting place of character that contributes to the rich and diverse cityscape of Rochester.
