Alkerden Gateway in Ebbsfleet Garden City provides 67 contemporary homes with customisable elements, enabling residents to create bespoke homes tailored to their needs. Through a six-stage customisation approach, residents have the choice of three ground floor layouts, a variety of external material options and details, including weatherboard and brick options with detailing patterns, all inspired by architectural typologies found in local villages. These have the effect of adding variety across the streetscape, creating visual interest and a defined character across the scheme. Various biodiversity enhancements are also available, encouraging sustainability across the development.

The scheme consists of family homes and apartments to suit a diverse community, located within three pedestrian-friendly and low traffic ‘homes zones’. Alongside new high-quality dwellings, residents have access to picturesque green spaces, designed by landscape architects LUC.

Ebbsfleet Development Corporation praised the quality of the proposal, endorsing the planning officers’ report that stated: “The proposal…sets out an extremely high quality of architectural design which will deliver attractive buildings set in home zones allowing social interaction, which will be complemented by quality landscaping.”

The scheme was shortlisted at the Housing Design Awards 2024.
