Development briefing: Kent & Medway

On Friday 11th October 2019 Design South East hosted a half-day showcase event of new and exciting developments across the County. With visually engaging presentations from both public and private sector, our guest speakers delivered updates on major developments, some of which were previously shown at our Opportunity area briefing events in 2017/18.

We continued to explore the revival of Kent’s towns, their sustainability, and how this regeneration has contributed to our growing economy, identity and quality of place. This session also provided an overview of new settlements, urban extensions, new transport links and infrastructure by some of the key people who are designing and developing in Kent & Medway.

Presentations not included: Kitchener Barracks/TopHat, and Park Farm South East/Barton Willmore.

Introduction to: Drawings for planning and design

This was the first in a series of half-day training events aimed at those early on in their careers who needed an introduction or refresher around some key areas of knowledge. The workshop reviewed different types of plans and drawings that are used to convey design ideas; plans, sections, elevations, sketches, and axonometrics, etc. Included in the hands-on exercises the groups examined drawings that showed proposed developments and those that are placed in a wider context.  There was also a view as to how visuals are used in architecture, urban design and landscape architecture.

This workshop was delivered by Design South East’s David Tittle, Head of Design Advice, and Jade Huang, Design Advisor, with key presentations from Teresa Borsuk, Senior Advisor, Pollard Thomas Edwards.

You are permitted to download a copy of the presentation.

Roundtable: The impact on Kent & Medway’s built environment of developments in transport technology

Until recently transport has remained largely unchanged, characterised by slow incremental innovation and costly infrastructure. As digital technology is transforming infrastructure we will see a change from transport as an operationally driven system to one that is responsive to user needs. This roundtable discussion provided short talks from two specialist contributors, focussing on the future of transport technology in Kent & Medway.

Roundtable: Shaping development and delivering design quality through local planning policies, a question of prescription or flexibility?

Roundtable: Responding to ‘Fixing our broken housing market’

This roundtable brought together local authorities, housebuilders and consultants to ask how far proposals in the government’s white paper will go to fixing the housing market in Kent and Medway.

We provided a platform for members to outline their responses to the government’s consultation but also to explore the proposition in the White Paper that the public’s relationship with house building is, at least in part, responsible for slow delivery.

Shop Fronts and Signage within Conservation Areas

A number of conservation areas in the District have a commercial heart and within these, the form and design of shop fronts and signs strongly influences the character of the built environment. The requirements of shopkeepers to display and advertise their goods must obviously be recognised, but at the same time it is the case that poorly designed and badly maintained shop fronts and signs not only detract from the character of an area, but are also bad for trade.
