Two-day study tour to Bristol and the West
Thursday 26th & Friday 27th September 2019
New for Kent Design – a two day study tour of Bristol, Gloucestershire and Swindon. A chance to see some exciting new developments and hear from their designers and planners and to network with colleagues from all over Kent.
Designing new neighbourhoods is primarily about creating a sense of community and place. How can an infrastructure of shared spaces be created? How can we encourage a sense of civility and neighbourly spirit in new developments, in both urban and rural settings?
We will study the urban environment of Bristol’s old docks through an ambitious mixed-use housing scheme, conceived through the idea of creating community and place in a heritage context, followed by a visit to a pioneering green development on the edge of the city. On day two we will visit two new rural communities that cater for the growing needs of family life and retirement.
Itinerary (may be subject to change):
Thursday 26th September
We recommend travelling on the 09:00 or 09:30 service from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads.
Arrive at the Architecture Centre, 16 Narrow Quay, Bristol BS1 4QA by 11:30/11:45am.
Lunchtime talks at the Architecture centre by key developers, architects and planners
Tour/talk: Wapping Wharf, Bristol – Mark Osbourne, Alec French Architects
Tour/talk: Hanham Hall – James Lord, HTA Design
Evening visit: Paintworks (delegates can dine nearby)
Friday 27th September
Tour/talk: Steepleton Retirement Community, Tetbury – Stephen Proctor, Proctor & Matthews + Emma Webster, PegasusLife.
Tour/talk: Tadpole Garden Village, Swindon – Peter Garitsis & Nicola Smith, Swindon Borough Council.
Please note: The study tour will end at Swindon train station. Estimated arrival back at London Paddington around 17.00 – 17:30.
A final coach stop can be arranged in Bristol for those who park at the hotel.
What’s included: coach transport during the trip, overnight accommodation, breakfast, lunches, and use of the architecture centre, Design South East staff, tour guides, speakers, supporting materials.
We have reserved rooms at the 4* Mercure Hotel in Bristol City Centre (breakfast included).
Not included: transport from London to Bristol / Swindon to London (or any other route or means of travel). The evening meal on Thursday, parking fees/charges (for those who prefer to drive to Bristol).
