2-Day Urban Design School: Design Coding in Kent

This 2-Day Urban Design School explores the relevance and potential of design codes in Kent, and discusses the opportunities presented by the new National Model Design Code.

On Day 1 we will explore:

  • the basics of design codes and guides, the differences between them and when each should be used
  • the broader context of design codes and the implications of the White Paper and the National Model Design Code
  • the Kent context and the role of design codes and guides in Kent developments
  • how to de-code or appraise a place using the NMDC worksheet

On Day 2 we will explore:

  • a case study in Kent developed using a design code
  • how to develop a piece of code drawing conclusions from the previous day’s NMDC worksheet results
  • the implications of design codes in planning and design

This 2-day Urban Design School is designed for public and private sector practitioners with limited or some knowledge and experience of design codes; those who would like to refresh or build on their existing knowledge; and those who are interested in exploring the opportunities posed by the new National Model Design Code.
