Cyclopark

Gravesend, Kent

Developer/Landlord Kent County Council
Architect Clague Architects
Contractor Betteridge & Milsom

Following the strategic realignment of part of the A2 away from the line of the old Watling Street roman road, adjacent to Gravesend, a long thin piece of vacant land was created between the old and new roads. This linear site became earmarked for outdoor activities, including various forms of cycling, skate boarding, equestrian pursuits and walking. Following an invited architectural competition arranged by Kent County Council, Clague were selected as project architect to assist the Council in their goal of making the Cyclopark a regional centre for cycling excellence.

The focal point for visitors to the park is the stunning new pavilion which contains reception, cafe, meeting & events spaces, cycle workshops and staff facilities. Clague conceived this facility as a ‘street’, along which every visitor to the park will pass. The intention of the design was to provide clear and direct lines of circulation through the building and beyond, creating a fluidity of movement that adds to the sense of cohesion within the scheme, which is mirrored in the highly legible main structure.

Cyclopark was completed in 2012 and has since become hugely popular facility of regional significance for skating, cycling, mountain biking and BMX. www.cyclopark.com
